Dob's Love Army

The Crazy Donkey …RIP.

I don’t really know what to say so I may just run some words out and hopefully they make sense.

My first memory of the Crazy Donkey was back when I was in a band called Kids Eat Free. I just met our producer (who would help us write better songs and change our name to the GetAway Drive) and his old band were set to play a gig over at the Donkey. I was probably around 15 or 16. The Downtown still existed and was much more preferred because they had the kind of shows I was much more interested in.

After the Downtown closed I had continued my booking experience over at the Vibe which was linked through the same company, Loaded Rock Shows, that worked over at the Donkey. Throughout the years I become more involved in working with the Donkey firsthand.

Not every show was great. But there were a lot of memorable ones. And most importantly it was more of a meeting spot for tons of friends. Heck, I even tried to go to one of the club nights and danced in a foam party.

Most of my favorite bands came here.

- I flew home from Mexico early to see Saves the Day and The Get Up Kids.

- I saw a secret never announced Taking Back Sunday show

- I saw a secret Brand New show

- Dashboard played an intimate acoustic gig shortly after his MSG show.

And many more.

One thing is for sure this is a hiccup in the band scene just because it was a place that bands strive to play. I was very honored to be able to play here several times over the years.

Now it’s time to look forward. The Long Island scene must come back together and remember what we have. Support your local shows. Not just the national acts - but everyone down to your next door neighbor that has a rock band.

I really urge you all to check out the shows over at Ollie’s Point. And go to local shows.

I don’t want to keep seeing venues close. I miss the Downtown. I miss the Donkey. I miss all the VFW halls. Keep it alive.

I guess I should also probably put a little tag in here: check out www.thescenelife.com

We’ve restarted it, and hopefully people can get talking about the LI scene on there.

What was your favorite Crazy Donkey memory?
